GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK Works under the regular supervision of the Investigations Lieutenant Operates telephone, computer, and radio equipment at Complaint desk of the police department. Receives reports from the public and other law enforcement agencies of crimes. Assist walk in complainants with questions and accessing Magistrate as needed. Relay information to law enforcement and other emergency response personnel; does related work as required. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Monitor and operate a radio console and computer equipment; Receive and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints; ask questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the complainant's situation as to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch emergency services (through central dispatch), or refer callers to other agencies; enters and modifies information into local, state and national computer databases; knowledge of providing excellent customer service; m ust understand jurisdictional boundaries, as well as thoroughfares, landmarks, public buildings and landmarks within the town. M ust have knowledge of telecommunications systems, which may include transmission, broadcasting, and switching systems, and computerized databases, including NCIC/VCIN, teletype operations and procedures; must understand basic dispatch codes, as well as standard abbreviations and industry terminology commonly used by law enforcement agencies; record details of calls, dispatches, and messages. maintain call records; enter, update, and retrieve information from teletype networks and computerized data systems regarding such things as wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, and stolen vehicles; Monitor various radio frequencies such as those used by other law enforcement agencies, public works departments, school security, and civil defense to keep apprised of developing situations; answer routine inquiries, and refer calls not requiring dispatches to appropriate departments and agencies; p erforms other related duties as may be assigned. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in work involving dealing with the public. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Complaint Desk Dispatchers must have a general knowledge of Virginia laws, regulations and local ordinances; must use judgment and decision making skills to evaluate situations and resolve matters; should have a general knowledge of the geography of the town; must be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; must have the ability to work cooperatively and establish effective relationships with co-workers, other agencies and the general public; should be able to analyze situations and adopt effective, appropriate and reasonable courses of action; must have the ability to write clear and accurate reports; must have the ability to successfully complete state certification; must demonstrate the use and care of department equipment; must have the ability to operate a computer and police (public safety) radio; and must possess and maintain a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must be able to use Law Enforcement Records Management System (LERMS) and Law Enforcement Mobile software. Must maintain NCIC/VCIN certification.
